Who can I donate to?
We asked 4 of our wonderful kidney donors, who have already been on the journey through our hospital to donate a kidney, to answer this question. Hear them explain a bit about themselves and who they donated a kidney to.
We’d love you to consider donating a kidney for any reason and for anyone that would benefit, but if it helps we tend to think about kidney donors (hopefully like you) falling into 1 of these 4 categories:
- Directed – donating directly to someone that the donor knows (family member or friend)
- Kidney sharing scheme (UKLKSS) – if a friend or family member wants to donate but doesn’t match they can join a share scheme
- Non-directed altruistic – do some good and donate to anyone that fits the match
- Directed altruistic – there’s an appeal and a person responds to that appeal

The process you’d go through if you wanted to do something amazing
1. You’d first complete a health questionnaire with us
It’s all confidential and won’t take long. It helps us check early on if you can donate a kidney.
2. We’ll then make an appointment for a face to face discussion
Our specialists at the Trust will invite you into the hospital to talk through any questions.
We’ll review the health questionnaire with you.
3. We’ll make you some appointments for blood tests, health checks and a full screening
Think about this as a bit of an MOT to make sure you are all good to proceed.
We also want to check compatibility to help think about who you are donating to.
4. Pre-surgery assessment
By now both we and you will be feeling confident things are looking good for the donation.
We’ll be making sure you are all fit and healthy for the operation.
We’ll also do some final kidney function tests and scans.
5. You’ll then see your consultant
We’ll review all the results with you and give you an additional examination.
We’ll also offer any other support you might need from our team.
6. Getting ready for the kidney donation
We’ll do one last review with you ahead of surgery.
We also want you to meet an independent assessor to make sure all the ‘right’ reasons have been thought about for this donation.
Now we are good to go.
You really are amazing!
Non-urgent advice: Remember!
You can change your mind at any point even if you have a date for surgery.
